If you asked me to choose my favourite season, I don’t think I would be able to answer. I love every season for different reasons. I love the feeling of crisp winter air on my cheeks and the cosiness of snuggling under blankets on a rainy evening. I love the easy long days of summer, filled with barbecues with friends and sunlight until eight in the evening. In Autumn it is the mild days of sunshine and cool breezes, the feeling of change in the air. Then there is Spring. Sweet, unpredictable, four seasons in one day, Spring. As I type this, the rain is pouring outside our living room window and I am sitting cosily under a warm blanket. Yesterday it was searingly hot and we had a water fight in the backyard with the hose. We have been enjoying all the wonderful colour and promise that this season brings. As we venture into our garden to pick flowers for our table, we are met with new colours, textures, sounds and smells.
Succulents seem to burst with colour overnight. This one makes me so happy. It is like an explosion of sunshine – a promise of warmer days to come.
There are native blooms to discover, like this Kangaroo Paw with its soft velvety fronds. This plant is a perfect learning opportunity for R. We talk about its texture, and how Australian natives have developed defences against heat, wind and drought.
Then there is our camellia tree which seems to bloom almost year ’round. This tree holds so many treasures. There are bees at work, spider webs and various insects hiding among the foliage, and it is perfect for observing the stages of a flower from branch to bud to glorious full boom and finally the spent petals which have dropped to the ground.
Before long our basket is full of colour and happiness.
