Sometimes the simplest Halloween activities for kids turn out to be the most fun – like this classic baking soda and vinegar experiment. Add some green food colouring and you have a bubbling Halloween potion.
A few weeks ago I bought some mini cauldrons from the dollar store. I just knew we’d find a use for them and they turned out to be the perfect prop for some Halloween bubbling potions. We’ve had fun mixing baking soda and vinegar many times before, but it never gets old. Even when we did this fun Halloween version, R still let out a “wow” and was totally absorbed by the reactions of the two ingredients mixing together.
For this activity, I simply filled three plastic cauldrons with baking soda and added a few drops of green food colouring. I then poured white vinegar into a jug and we were ready to play. If you are going to do this indoors like we did, then I would definitely recommend placing the cauldrons on a baking tray to catch any over flowing potion.
R began pouring the vinegar into the cauldrons and immediately they began to fizz and bubble over. The reaction was very fast and he was excited to see how much “potion” was being created.
I had laid a magical wizard’s wand (a.k.a a stick from our garden) next to the tray and R used this to mix and stir the bubbling mixture. There was some great imaginative play happening.
Some of the baking soda had clumped together at the bottom of the cauldrons so R tipped them upside down and poured the baking soda into the green liquid on the tray, making lots of fizzy splashes.
This simple activity was a wonderful playful science lesson as well as a fantastic way to encourage imaginative play. It’s such a classic, I know we’ll be doing it again.
Here are some more fun Halloween ideas that we’ve enjoyed recently.
