Simple outdoor play always makes us so happy. Sometimes that might be blowing bubbles, digging around in the mud, or some water play. Yesterday it was a stick, a few paper streamers and lots and lots of wind. Lately the weather here has been W-I-N-D-Y. Like crazy knock the chairs over, bust open the shed door type of windy. I really love being out in the wind, there’s an energy of adventure about it, and since yesterday was slightly less crazy (no chance of being hit by garden furniture), we ventured out to play. I made a simple ribbon wand for R so he could run around and have some fun in the wind. I collected one of the many sticks that had fallen from the giant gum tree in our front garden, attached some strips of tissue paper using adhesive tape and voila! Instant fun! R twirled and ran and jumped around. So much happiness! He was so excited to watch the streamers flying around as he moved. Even the sound of the wind as it rustled through the strips of paper was exciting. Even though our ribbon wand was made using fragile tissue paper streamers it has actually held up very well. Despite some very energetic swishing and waving and twirling we’ve only lost one or two strips of paper. If you wanted to make something similar that will last a little longer then you might want to use lengths of ribbon instead of paper. What’s your favourite way to play outside? Do you venture out when it gets windy or do you enjoy staying cosy indoors?
